Turn Your Junk Into Money Using Facebook Marketplace

This article will explain how you can fill up your piggy bank and rid of the clutter in your life without having to go through the trouble of listing on Craigslist and eBay.

We all have things just lying around our house, whether it be clothes that we don’t wear or outdated electronics. If you are in a pinch with your monthly funds, it might surprise you to know that Facebook Marketplace can be a practical solution to the clutter and your financial problems.

Facebook Marketplace

In essence, the Facebook Marketplace is much like apps such as OfferUp and LetGo. However, you don’t have to download separate apps and clutter your phone storage to be able to make big bucks with your goods. You can find people from your area to get rid of the clutter quickly and easily, whereas on Craigslist and eBay it could take days to weeks to find someone to buy your listed items.

Tip: Currently there are thousands of local Buy/Sell Marketplace groups on Facebook and it is quite easy to find one that serves your area.

Finding A Group

This is the first important step to being able to sell on Facebook. I recommend finding a group that is as close to you as you can find. Most of the time, you can find one that is 5–10 miles from you or that serves your county by just typing in the name of your city or the name of your county. Finding a county Buy/Sell group is especially helpful if you are like me and live in a rural area.

Once you have found a local group, you can join it. However, just like most groups on Facebook these days, you will need to answer some questions more times than not on the application. This is normal!

Tip: It may take up to 48 hours in some cases for the group to review your application, so be prepared to wait a few hours and be patient.

Listing Your Item

Once you have been accepted into a local Buy/Sell Facebook Marketplace group, you can start listing right away.

To list, you go to the Facebook group page and click the Sell Something option, a window will come up like the one below:

You simply fill out the form with what you want to sell, and pick 6–8 high quality photos showing your product.

My Top Tips For Success on the Marketplace

My biggest tips are no-brainers, but a lot of people over-look them when listing something on Facebook. Seeing as I have been selling things online since the early Craigslist days, I have compiled some useful and creative ideas that have helped me sell hundreds of high priced items.

Tip #1: The Title is Your Biggest Selling Point

The title is absolutely a make or break for the Marketplace. You need to be descriptive and creative with it. There are many people who post on the Marketplace so having a title that stands out makes your listing unique and interests buyers.

eg. Beautiful ____ Brand Hardly-Worn Button-Down Blouse With _____ Size __ vs. Worn Button-Down Blouse Size __

Tip #2: Don’t Skimp on the Product Description

The next most important tip I can give you is to not just list a short description, especially after coming up with an amazing title for the item you are selling. Try to be as descriptive as possible and remember to add important details such as the sizing or product specifications. You must be one hundred percent honest in your description, so don’t write lies or they will be found out when you go to make the exchange.

Be sure to write whether the item must be picked up (written as MPU) or if you prefer not to hold the item for someone (no-holds/NH).

Tip #3: The Exchange

Always be careful to have someone go with you when you go to make an exchange and if you are inviting someone to your house for a MPU sale, be sure to take proper precautions to keep yourself and your family safe.

A Word on Safety

Facebook Marketplace is a wonderful place to sell clutter and things that you don’t use anymore. However, it is important to keep yourself and your family safe. Never meet up with someone in a private place unless you have someone with you and are properly protected. Keep safe, and you will find that the Facebook Marketplace can be a valuable asset to you and your piggy-bank.
